Karlovac is a city deeply connected to its rivers, with locals often having a favorite river they know by its unique color and character. Nestled in green valleys beneath the historic Dubovac Castle and surrounded by centuries-old parks, Karlovac boasts the highest ratio of urban to green spaces in Croatia. It's a place where nature and history intertwine. Dubovac Castle, perched 185 meters above the city, is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in the region, with a rich history tied to noble families like the Frankopans and Zrinskis. Despite numerous attacks by the Turks, the fortress stood strong, a testament to its resilience.

Active vacation

As a city on four rivers, Karlovac is perfect for rafting and canoeing. Rafting on the Mrežnica River, with its stunning nature, waterfalls, and canyons, is particularly popular among tourists. The best time for rafting is in spring or late autumn when river levels are ideal.
Cycling enthusiasts will love the seven scenic bike routes in the Karlovac region, covering a total of 150 km. These routes pass through beautiful villages and offer stunning landscapes. One such route, "Putevima knezova Frankopana," is a 27 km loop starting in the center of Karlovac, taking you through historical sites and charming countryside.
For those who prefer hiking, Karlovac offers several great trails, including the Dubovac Trail and routes around Ozalj. Additionally, the city's river beaches, especially Foginovo on the Korana River, are popular spots for swimming and recreation. Visitors can also enjoy free sports facilities like basketball, volleyball, cycling, and running tracks.
Lastly, a unique experience awaits in Brođani, where the historical "Žitna lađa Zora" boat offers 90-minute tours on the Kupa River, sharing the history of river trade and local culture while serving local delicacies.

Aquatika, a freshwater aquarium featuring over 100 species, highlights Karlovac’s unique connection to its rivers.
